Tartans, kilts and Scottish textiles private talk and workshop
Learn about the Scottish textile industry and crafts with a traditionnal Kiltmaker
If the swing of the kilt fascinates you, and if you want to know more about tartan and other Scottish textiles, this experience will be just right for you!
My partner Jonathan and I are the only French kiltmakers traditionally trained in Scotland and we would love to share our passion with you. Join me for a private talk and workshop in a 17th century building in Edinburgh Old town.
Workshop:
I will present to you the History of Highland dress and tartan in Scotland, from the Feileadh-mor (great kilt) depicted in Outlander, to contemporary tailored kilts.
Making a kilt, sewn by hand from start to finish, requires a lot of precision, dedication, technique and passion. For this reason, a lot of high street shops and online businesses chose to favour machine-made kilts – which are cheaper and quicker to produce – compromising the quality and durability of the final garment. I will talk you through the evolution of the kiltmaking industry, the good, and the bad, how it ended up being added to the Red List of Endangered crafts in 2021, and what we try to achieve through our practice to be part of preserving this precious craft.
You will also learn about the main steps of crafting a high quality handmade kilt. One of them, crucial, and more complicated that it first appears, is the tartan pleating. After showing you the basics of it, you will have a chance to try it yourself, and discover the endless possibilities offered by one single tartan.
I will also tell you more about the different types of tartans and cloth woven in Scotland, from the bigger tartan mills, down to the independent Harris Tweed weavers.
Private experience for a group of up to 6 people*.
